Anxiety is part of us as human beings. Some anxiety is a good thing as it warns us of danger, and to some degree it helps us to improve our performance.
Here are some grounding exercises to help you when Anxiety becomes overwhelming.
Grounding basically means to bring your focus to what is happening to you physically, either in your body or in your surroundings, instead of being trapped by the thoughts in your mind that are causing you to feel anxious. It helps you stay in the present moment instead of worrying about things that may happen in the future or events that have already happened but you still find yourself going over and over them in your head.
1. Sit with both feet on the flat on the floor, squeeze your toes as if you are trying to grip the floor. Squeeze until you feel some pain. Take a deep breath and on the out breath release your toes with your breath slowly. You should feel your legs and your body relax.
2. 5-4-3-2-1 5 things you can see 4 things you can touch 3 things you can hear 2 things you can smell 1 thing you can taste ensure you name them all either in your head or out loud.
3. Hold an object in your hand and really bring your full focus to it. If I was looking at one of my stones, I would see the patterns that run through it, see the colour variances. Look at where shadows may fall on parts of it or maybe there are shapes that form within the object. Feel how heavy or light it is in your hand and what the surface texture feels like under your fingers.
4.Close your eyes and In your mind draw around your foot. Choose your favourite colour pen and start at your heal, imagine the pen tracing around your foot. All the time being aware of your breath.
5. Dance like no one is watching.
